Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s tumultuous time in the family, which ultimately led to what has now become known as “Megxit,” was mostly the Duke of Sussex’s fault for not preparing his American wife for the tradition-bound Firm, a royal expert insisted.

“He’s not the sharpest guy, but maybe he didn’t want to explain it. It’s hard work being a member of the royal family,” the author of Philip Century told Page Six. “People think it’s not but it is. It’s not glamorous and maybe she didn’t fancy that after at all.”

However, Jobson didn’t put all the blame on , noting could have shown more interest in the traditions and have done her own research on how to properly adjust to her new .

“It’s up to you to do your own homework if you want to marry into a prestigious family,” he proclaimed. Jobson added that she had little excuse for not knowing how to do things since the Palace assigned Samantha Cohen — a member of Queen Elizabeth II‘s personal team — to teach the former actress about the ins and outs of her duties as a duchess.

According to Jobson, the couple may have just wanted out of their royal lives because they saw more opportunity in Hollywood given the Palace pecking order, with Prince William — the heir to the throne after Prince Charles — and wife Kate Middleton always above the duo.

“When she saw that she had the little house and William and Kate were the number one couple, she probably didn’t understand that and thought, ‘Well, we can do better than this and start commercializing the royal family,’” he continued.

All eyes have been on Harry and Meghan since they stepped back from their senior royal duties last year and moved to the U.S. to start their lives anew. They have since signed two multi-million dollar deals with Netflix and Spotify to produce their own podcasts, documentaries, feature films, scripted shows and more. 

Jobson explained that the point of the royal family is “service and helping others,” before shaming the couple for capitalizing on their royal titles for monetary gain.

“It’s not to do with helping yourself. I’m afraid that’s what’s happened here. I blame Harry, really, because he knew the story but he wanted his cake and to eat it and you can’t do that,” he concluded.

In February, Buckingham Palace confirmed Harry and Meghan wouldn’t be returning as working members of the royal family, relinquishing them of their patronages. 

Since their break away, the duo seemed to solidify their split from the royals by sitting down with Oprah Winfrey last month for a bombshell tell-all. During their interview, the duo accused the royal family of racist remarks, claimed the Palace refused to assist Meghan when she was having suicidal thoughts, and cited the family’s lack of support as the reason they decided to step back.
